The Story of Adare Manor

County Limerick · From Adare House to the Neo-Gothic estate

Before the manor

The great house began as Adare House.

The present manor was not built from nothing. The earlier Georgian Adare House was constructed in the 1720s by Valentine Quin, grandfather of the 1st Earl of Dunraven.

That older house became the foundation for one of nineteenth-century Ireland’s most ambitious country-house projects.

Windham & Caroline

A husband, a wife and an extraordinary project.

Windham Henry Quin, the 2nd Earl of Dunraven, and Lady Caroline Wyndham began the transformation in 1832. The project became especially important after the Earl was badly affected by gout and was increasingly confined indoors; Caroline encouraged him to devote himself to the rebuilding project.

The work expanded into a decades-long architectural programme rather than a conventional renovation.

The architects

The “self-designed” story is more complicated.

Adare Manor’s own historical account notes that Lady Caroline encouraged the idea that the house had been planned by her husband without an architect, but modern scholarship attributes major contributions to James Pain and other designers including L.N. Cottingham, Philip Charles Hardwick and Augustus Pugin.

The building therefore reflects collaboration between the owners, architects, craftsmen and specialist designers rather than a single author.

The famine years

A magnificent building project during a terrible crisis.

Construction continued through the Great Irish Famine. Adare Manor’s historical account records that the building works provided employment for local people during a period of extraordinary hardship.

Lady Caroline also established a School of Needlework aimed at developing marketable skills and employment opportunities for local women. These details complicate the picture of the estate: it was a symbol of wealth, but it was also an employer and institution within the surrounding community.

The family home

A house lived in, not simply displayed.

Adare Manor remained the Dunraven family home into the early 1980s. The estate hosted family occasions, social gatherings, hunt balls, game fairs and concerts, while the surrounding landscape was developed with gardens, parkland and the River Maigue at its centre.

The house’s later life therefore grew out of a much longer tradition of domestic, social and estate activity.

The modern chapter

From historic home to international resort.

After the family-home era, Adare Manor entered a new phase as a luxury destination. A major restoration, refurbishment and expansion preceded its reopening in 2017.

The Ryder Cup now adds another chapter: the estate is no longer simply a historic Irish country house but a global sporting venue whose story is being extended into the twenty-first century.
